12.1.2012LONGFELLOW HOUSE TOURS
Tour poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s childhood home and discover how children of the era experienced the Christmas holiday. Decorated with period furnishings and family memorabilia, these guided tours offer a glimpse into the life of the poet and his family, as well as into the cultural and social history of the 19thcentury. House tours include a special mini-exhibit, Indoor Amusements: Toys & Games from our Collections, featuring a selection of toys from the 1850s to the 1990s. The earliest toys were made at home, but store-bought toys were popular gifts for children beginning in the mid-19th century when they became more widely available, and the idea of a Christmas shopping season began to take shape. The Longfellow House ell will be adorned with ornaments and gifts for visitors to purchase. In addition, the Museum Store will be filled with a variety of seasonal items as well as Maine related books and merchandise. Longfellow House Tours begin November 23 and run Monday-Saturday, 10am – 5pm; Sunday, 12p, – 5 pm. On December 24 and 31, tours are 10am – 2pm and the last tour leaves at 1pm. Admission: Adults are $12. Seniors, Students with ID and AAA Members are $10. Children ages 3-17 are $3. Maine State Ballet's "The Nutcracker"
