Joshua proposed at the ocean’s edge on the Cape Elizabeth property where Elizabeth grew up. She cried, and a fog rolled in, seeming to envelop them for those precious moments. Elizabeth and Joshua decided to marry at Elizabeth’s childhood home—the bride-to-be wanted to depart from her childhood house with her father on her arm, and to hold the ceremony overlooking the ocean view that had filled her bedroom windows as a girl. They held the wedding weekend at the end of June, hoping that some from far away would choose to make an extended Maine vacation at that time of year. Many joined them for a lobster bake at Portland Yacht Services on Thursday and at the gorgeous rehearsal dinner on Friday, catered by Churchill Events. At the rehearsal dinner, Elizabeth wore the sari Joshua’s mother had worn to her wedding in India 30 years prior. At the Sunday brunch the day after the wedding, she donned the two-piece batik her own mother wore when she wed Elizabeth’s father in Bali.

Why…

blue? Blue is Elizabeth and Josh’s favorite color, and the couple tried to incorporate as many “Maine” blues into the ceremony and reception as possible—blue mussel shells, blueberries, blue ocean, blue flowers. Blue hydrangeas were the perfect Maine flower for their summer wedding. Wispy green foliage and roses added depth and variety to the arrangements.

Kitchen Chicks Catering? Kitchen Chicks came highly recommended, offering wonderful displays and tastes for the reception. Elizabeth and Josh also served slices of pizza and Manhattan-style hot dogs as a late night treat, a nod to New York City, where they now live.

that tent? The wooden tent poles and sailcloth tent, from Sperry Tents, are evocative of sailboats and were just right for their coastal wedding.

that dress? The folds and gathers of the peony-inspired dress reminded Elizabeth of waves breaking and rushing over rocks. Madeleine’s Daughter removed two appliqué butterflies to make the dress simpler.

that cake? In March before the wedding, the couple toured Maine bakeries, trying out their gluten-free creations in cupcake form. They went with Good Eats Boutique, which created a vanilla cake topped with blueberries.
