Philip Barter was born in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, in 1939. He studied with Spanish abstract expressionist Alfonso Sosa in California in the 1960s, and with Fritz Rockwell after returning to Maine. He was influenced by their use of bold form and color. Philip started exhibiting in the late 60s, and has shown in major Maine galleries throughout the last 50 years. He is also in the collections of the Portland Museum of Art, Olin Art Center, Bates College, and the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, as well as many private collections worldwide. He is currently represented by Gleason Fine Art in Boothbay Harbor and Philip’s home studio/gallery in Sullivan, Maine.
“There is a lot of give and take in life. Philip Barter’s paintings reflect his out-of-the-ordinary journey. To play on his name, this artist has bartered plenty to achieve the stature he enjoys today: one of the very finest.”
