John Carnes’s Combing Her Hair
2011, graphite over a watercolor wash, 15″ x 11″
“Combing Her Hair originated in a group life–drawing session in Brunswick. During a break the model leaned forward to brush her hair before taking up the next pose. I quickly sketched her gesture and reduced it to the minimum line work necessary. Back in the studio, I brushed in a wash of turquoise blue on a sheet of 140 pound, cold–press Arches watercolor paper and redrew the figure from my sketch book. Not too much, just enough.”
