Amilie and Matt both grew up in Maine, so where else would they marry but stunning Mount Desert Island and their hometown? Harris Farm was a perfect venue, with a large field for the ceremony and views of the ocean beyond. “We like to do things our own way and make things ourselves,” says Amilie, so they planned their wedding from the bottom up. They wanted guests to feel like participants, not spectators, and incorporated them in various ways throughout the ceremony, even passing out kazoos to be played alongside the processional music. Matt sandblasted jars to hold candles and the pair collected a variety of salt and pepper shakers and stones from nearby beaches. Amilie and one of her bridesmaids woke up early on the day of the wedding and drove around, picking up flowers along the side of the road and pulling together beautiful bouquets. She wore a dress she felt comfortable in and knew Matt would love. The headband was her grandmother’s, updated with new leaves and flowers for a fairytale look.

“I WENT TO SCHOOL FOR PRINTMAKING—THOUGH I NEVER GET TO USE THOSE SKILLS AS A FIREFIGHTER—AND I WANTED TO MAKE SOMETHING SPECIAL THAT WAS REFLECTIVE OF US AS A COUPLE.”

Why…

those colors? Amilie and Matt didn’t have a set color scheme, but rather tried to incorporate colors from the island, colors of the sea, the grass, and forest.

that sign? Amilie painted a sign that said “We are really glad you are here.” It was one of the first things guests saw as they made their way to the reception site.

that dress? Amilie had tried on numerous dresses that all felt cookie-cutter to her. This lightweight Saja dress spoke to her, and she knew Matt would love it.
