Madder Root of Old Town sells hand-printed organic linen tea towels, napkins, and produce bags. Founded on a desire to create a quality product and company—and avoid negative impact on the environment—Madder Root produces what its customers call “kitchen art.” The company’s fern, lupine, sand dollar, crustacean, and shellfish array designs, are inspired by the flora and fauna of Maine. Madder Root was Etsy’s April 2012 featured seller.

02 Swallowfield

Based on Mount Desert Island, Judd-McGee’s papercuts, illustrations, and mixed media work reflect the Maine landscape in intricate, graphic patterns. Her Swallowfield Etsy Shop primarily sells pigment prints and cards. Judd-McGee also takes on freelance illustration projects and regularly shows her work in galleries around Maine and New England.

Coco + Gil Corral

Founded in 1998, lovinganvil grew out of Coco Corral’s desire to contribute financially to her family while staying home with her young daughter. Opening an Etsy store in 2006 allowed Coco and her husband Gil to sell their jewelry, small sculptures, and marionettes on a national as well as local level—Esperanza Spalding wore their pieces at the 2012 Academy Awards. The shop is based out of the family’s 1800s farmhouse in Biddeford.

Inspired by an effort to provide her delicate-skinned daughter Lucy with soaps made of ingredients one could easily pronounce, Amanda Nolan produces handcrafted cold process soaps, lip balms, skin creams, and perfume oils in Farmington. Long Winter Soap’s products evoke the Maine landscape with scents such as blueberry balsam, campfire, maple almond, and meadow.

Addie Peet designs and creates hand-painted canvas floorcloths in Winterport. Recalling a “lost art” that dates back to the 1600s, Peet’s floorcloths are created using heavy raw duck canvas and durable, flexible, and environmentally conscious painting materials. Inspired by the “Yankee ingenuity of functionality and practicality,” Peet’s floorcloths are utilitarian works of art.

06 MiMS + Rough & Tumble

Operating out of a 1929 church on a mountain in Hebron, Natasha Durham Design offers two lines of handbags: MiMS and Rough and Tumble. The Rough and Tumble bags are fashioned from waxed canvas and leather and display a distinct turn-of-the-century influence. With materials sourced from Maine, the designs are brought to fruition by Durham’s team of seven to ten local cutters and sewers—”mostly stay-at-home moms.”
