REAL WEDDINGS-February

Although she is from Massachusetts, downeast Maine has always been Meghan’s touchstone. When she and Jono decided to get married, they could imagine no other place to hold their wedding than along the shores of Frenchman’s Bay, near her family’s cabin. Driving along Route One as a girl Meghan remembers a bed-and-breakfast on a hill caught her eye. “That’s where I want to get married,” the ten-year-old told her parents. Twenty or so years later, her wish came true. Meghan and Jono rented Sealight, the spacious home next door to the bed-and-breakfast, put up a tent in the yard, and said “I do” by the ocean. The wedding was a reflection of the couple and their lives together—they were married in the open air, in a simple, heartfelt ceremony, and danced into the night with family and friends.

“I GOT MY CHILDHOOD DREAM AND IT WAS BETTER THAN I COULD HAVE IMAGINED!”

Why…

that dress?
After being a part of many friends’ weddings, Meghan knew all too well the hidden complexities of big gowns. Instead, she went with something simple she could easily dance in. Meghan and her mother made the sash with ribbon and lace that complemented the material of the dress.

those centerpieces?
Meghan chose fresh dahlias in honor of her great aunt, who used to have a dahlia garden by the family cabin in Steuben, and also incorporated details that reminded her and Jono of Maine’s natural beauty—balsam fir, shore rocks, shells, moss, Queen Anne’s lace. The table numbers and candleholders were handmade by Meghan’s uncle from birch logs.

Cleonice?
The couple thought the Ellsworth restaurant’s Mediterranean-style buffet was perfect. The meal offered lots of variety and featured local delicacies.

ice cream instead of cake?
“Everyone who knows me knows I love ice cream,” says Meghan. The owners of Mortons Moo helped the couple replace cake with an ice cream sundae bar, which is more their style.
