SURRY, BLUE HILL

Away from the tourism of many coastal communities find Blue Hill, where life moves at a slower pace. The peninsula is full of farms and restaurants and shops that focus on resources from the region, and there is also a close-knit art community. On certain nights of the week, Tinder Hearth, a bakery operated by musicians, makes pizza in a wood-fired oven. MOUNT DESERT ISLAND

Acadia National Park is Mount Desert Island’s biggest attraction, especially in the summer months, but even in the winter the park’s carriage trails are enjoyed by snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Thanks to the popularity of the island in the Gilded Age, grand, historic properties can be found in areas such as Northeast Harbor and Bar Harbor. SULLIVAN, GOULDSBORO

Sullivan and Gouldsboro are for those looking for a retreat to a simpler way of life. Gouldsboro has homes along the ocean that have views of Cadillac Mountain and Corea, a small fishing village. Sullivan is the gateway to the Schoodic Peninsula, where the rough surf fills the granite coastline with tidal pools for searching. Properties vary from capes on private peninsulas on the water to post-and- beam homes with backyards for lobster bakes and family gatherings.
