Have you been thoroughly spooked yet? With numerous Halloween specials available on a myriad of streaming services, it’s been easy to find something bone-chilling to watch every night of the week this month. Among our staff’s recent views is Midnight Mass, a mini series on Netflix that “takes place in a run-down fishing community on a remote island that will strike a familiar chord with Mainers,” says our creative director Joel Kuschke. “Director Mike Flanagan’s story trades cheap jump scares for beautifully developed characters and emotions. The plot combines elements of gothic horror and vampire lore with a modern-day exploration of faith, loss, and redemption.” Add it to your watch list, and read on for our roundup for this weekend in Maine: 

Something to Do: 

Sure, you love corn mazes, but they’re always the same, right? This weekend, mix it up with Treworgy Family Orchards’ night maze! Billed as family friendly, the night maze is not designed to scare and instead takes the traditional appeal of a corn maze to the next level. Lighted stations throughout the maze will guide you and provide treats to sustain you on your journey. If you can’t make it this weekend, don’t worry! They’re open next weekend, too. Grab your flashlights and headlamps, and prepare to wander this labyrinth under the harvest moon.

Somewhere to Go: 

We’ve said it numerous times over the past few weeks, but we will jump at any chance to wear flannel. Throw on your favorite flannel shirt and get ready to celebrate folk music in the Pine Tree State at the Maine Fall Fiddle Fest! Geared toward music fans and fiddlers of all ages, the two-day event features live performances and workshops presented by the Waldo Theater. The festival kicks off with a live jam session at Odd Alewives Farm Brewery this Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., with great beer and pizza to go around.

Something to Eat: 

Have you heard the big news yet? Portland’s Công Tử Bột was featured in The 2021 Restaurant List from the New York Times! Not only that, it was the only restaurant in Maine to make the cut this year. If you haven’t had a chance to try out the daytime cafe’s Vietnamese cuisine, let this be your push. Our recommendation? You can’t go wrong with the phở gà, a house style chicken phở. As NYT food writer Priya Krishna notes, “A meal here is an extremely compelling argument for the superiority of Vietnamese breakfast food.” The restaurant is currently closed for indoor dining, but you can order takeaway or enjoy your meal on the covered patio.

Are scary movies not your thing, but you still want to get into the spirit of the season? Who better to turn to than the king of horror? Pick up The Shining by Stephen King to set your skin crawling. We recommend heading to your favorite local bookstore (Print in Portland is one of the many independent bookstores in Maine that we love) to grab a copy if you don’t already have one, and find a well-lit reading nook—you’ll definitely want it. 

Something to Watch: 

With the downright summery weather we’ve been experiencing this week, we’re heading to the drive-in! Continue your spooky adventures by watching a double feature of Venom 2 and Halloween Kills at the Bridgton Twin Drive-In Theatre. Bring your heavy blankets and a thermos in case, and you might want to check the back seat to make sure no ghosts or ghouls are sneaking up on you while you watch.
