In 2017 the Farnsworth is presenting two major exhibitions featuring the work of women who have played important roles in twentieth-century American art, both of whom also had deep connections to Maine:  Marguerite Zorach and Louise Nevelson.

This sunny, funny, international smash hit sensation unfolds on a Greek island paradise when on the eve of her wedding, a young woman’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited twenty years ago.

Marguerite Zorach – An Art-Filled Life is an exhibition that brings together sixty paintings and textiles by Marguerite Thompson Zorach made between 1910 and 1965. In highlighting her contributions as a modernist who helped changed the course of American art, the Farnsworth presents the full range of her skills.

The 1920s come roaring to life with showgirls, gangsters and more in this musical adaptation of Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath’s madcap film Bullets Over Broadway. Bullets Over Broadway is the hilarious musical comedy about the making of a Broadway show, filled with tap dancing gangsters, saucy showgirls, big laughs and colorful characters including an aging diva, a savant hit-man and Sally Struthers.

Born in Boston MA, Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of 13, beginning a 40-year career that has encompassed performance, songwriting and teaching.

This exhibition will explore Marsden Hartley’s complex and visually arresting relationship with his native state—from the lush Post-Impressionist inland landscapes with which he launched his career, to the later roughly rendered paintings of Maine’s rugged coastal terrain, its hardy inhabitants, and the magisterial Mount Katahdin.
