Snow cats bring backcountry skiers and snowboarders to Sugarloaf’s more wild terrain.
While most skiers and snowboarders visit Sugarloaf for its miles of groomed trails, backcountry skiers look east of the lift-serviced runs to Burnt Mountain. Fans of backcountry skiing and snowboarding have been trudging up Burnt Mountain since long before the resort began offering cat skiing in March 2018, but the snow cat operation makes the rugged terrain more accessible. Last winter, drone photographer Sam Trafton of Maine Drone Imaging captured the scene from above: skiers and snowboarders catching a ride in a snow cat and exploring the glades of Burnt Mountain.
When conditions allow, snow cats bring adventurous and experienced skiers and snowboarders up Burnt Mountain, where they’re greeted by ski patrol. There are different options for riding down, with plenty deep powder and steep glades in the ski resort’s side-country terrain.
