The Maine Weekender, April 15—17
Spring in Maine is typically a fierce back and forth between rainy and sunny, warm and cold, muddy and…less muddy. It’s easy to see why T.S. Eliot dubbed April the “cruelest month.” However, with Easter a few days away and the promise of temperatures consistently in the 50s and 60s, we’re going to try to be patient just a little while longer. Here’s our roundup for this weekend in Maine:
Something to Do:
Gear up for the start of spring biking season this Friday with the Portland Bike Party’s one year anniversary ride! The 7- to 8-mile trek will start and end under the Casco Bay Bridge in South Portland’s Thomas Knight Park, with a break at Fort Preble in the middle for a dance party. Check back on Friday for the map of the route, and be sure to bring bike lights to use once the sun goes down!
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Thomas Knight Park, South Portland
Somewhere to Go:
Is the Easter Bunny tired of hiding eggs around your house and yard and wants a change of scenery? This Saturday, take your children to Young’s Greenhouse in South Paris for a community Easter Egg Hunt to see what the mischievous rabbit has cooked up! Bring your own Easter basket and prepare to hunt for eggs (including a special golden egg in each greenhouse), win prizes for each age group, and eat plenty of popcorn and cotton candy. Plus, the greenhouses will have early season tropical plants, easter lilies, and succulents available for purchase.
When: 10 a.m.–12 p.m. Saturday
Where: 643 High St., South Paris
Something to Vote For:
The team at Maine magazine is celebrating the people and places that make our state’s culinary culture so special with our inaugural Maine Food and Drink Awards, presented by Eaton Peabody! The past two years have been challenging for restaurants and other food-related businesses, so we’re excited for the opportunity to recognize an industry that provides so much to our communities—and our plates and glasses. Today is the last day to nominate your favorite restaurants and chefs by 4 p.m. in over 50 categories, so don’t delay!
Something to Drink:
Are you a diehard Allagash Brewery fan? Head over to Novare Res in Portland this Saturday for the annual Gasharoo, a celebration of Allagash beers with over 22 kegs on tap, a special menu, and music! Grab your friends and be sure to come thirsty!
When: Noon–1 a.m. Saturday
Where: 4 Canal Plaza, Suite 1, Portland
Something to Put on Your Radar:
Ready to do your part for the environment? Next Wednesday, join Rubbish! (a collaboration between Saltwater Classroom and GoGo Refill) at Austin Street Brewery in Portland for the first of their monthly community trash clean-ups that will go through the spring and into the fall! Celebrate Earth month with a trash clean-up around the Austin Street neighborhood, followed by a raffle and happy hour in the tap room.
When: 5–7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20
Where: 115 Fox St., Portland
