The Maine Weekender, December 24—26
If there was any concern about this year being a white Christmas, it’s safe to say that that’s been taken care of thanks to last weekend’s storm (as well as the flurries on the radar for this Saturday). The real question is, how did you weather the ice storm yesterday? While most roads were clear, navigating sidewalks involved a lot of Mainer know-how, including muttering “walk like a penguin” while cautiously shuffling along. Nothing beats the glistening of iced-over branches in the morning sunlight, though! Whether you celebrate Christmas or just appreciate the holiday season, here’s our roundup for this weekend in Maine:
Something to Do:
Although in-person performances at Portland Stage were cancelled, you can still experience the magic of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol virtually! From now until January 4, tune in to a recording of the PS cast in their 25th anniversary performance of the holiday classic. Cozy up next to the fire and get ready to be visited by the spirits of Christmas past, present, and future from the comfort of your own home.
Somewhere to Go:
If you’re scrambling to find last-minute presents for family and friends, and also want a wintery holiday adventure, head to the L.L. Bean flagship store in Freeport for the annual Northern Lights celebration! With a free ice skating rink (skate rentals included), a giant snow globe where you can take wintry photos, a full model railroad diorama, and free hot chocolate on weekends, you can get your fill of snowy activities while also buying all your stocking stuffers.
When: Now through Friday, December 31
Where: 95 Main St., Freeport
Something to Eat:
Now that the weather has turned, are you in the mood for comfort food? Head to the A1 Diner in Gardiner this Friday for a Christmas Eve Brunch! Tuck into gingerbread waffles, eggs benedict, or a turkey cranberry monte cristo sandwich, and wash it all down with mimosas and prosecco before you head home to finish wrapping presents.
When: 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday
Where: 3 Bridge St., Gardiner
Something to Drink:
If you need another reason to be excited that winter is in full swing, look no further! Breweries around the state are putting holiday beers on tap to keep you warm on frigid nights. Read our round up of six Maine beers that pair perfectly with woodstoves and ski retreats, and get ready to hole up for the darker months of the year with plenty of beverage options.
Something to Look Forward to:
While you may not associate winter with farm dinners, Tops’l Farm in Waldoboro is setting that record straight! Throughout January and February, the farm is hosting several winter raclette dinners and lunches, with a course of oysters and cocktails out on the snowy grounds of the farm, and the full raclette meal (featuring charcuterie boards and traditional, melty swiss cheese) in the barn.
Where: 341 Bremen Rd., Waldoboro
