The Maine Weekender, February 11—13
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Have you made your plans yet? With surprisingly mild weather in the forecast for the next few days, perhaps a full-day outdoor excursion will help you sweep that special someone off their feet. Even if you don’t celebrate V-Day, if you’re in Portland on Monday, you can still get in on the fun by seeing where the Valentine’s Bandit (or Phantom, depending on who you ask) will strike! Here’s our roundup for this weekend in Maine:
Something to Do:
Does your Valentine love an outdoor adventure, regardless of the weather? This weekend, pull on your sweaters and hats to take a Sweetheart Row with DoryWoman Rowing, run by licensed Maine guide and ocean rower Nicolle Littrell! The guided tour will take participants around Belfast Harbor or the Passagassawakeag River, with the chance to get a close-up view of seabirds and seals. Plus, tea and sweets will be available to munch on (and warm up with) during the ride.
When: Friday, Sunday, and Monday
Where: Belfast Bay, Belfast
Somewhere to Go:
Can’t get enough of the snow? Make your way up to the mountains this Saturday for a full moon guided ski or snowshoe tour at Carter’s XC in Bethel! Enjoy the beauty of snow in the moonlight while you venture out to Farwell Mountain, and then return to the cross-country center for a bonfire and hot chocolate! The event is free, with rentals available for $18–$25.
When: 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday
Where: 786 Intervale Rd., Bethel
Something Sweet:
If you are in the mood for a low-key V-Day this year, order a Valentine’s Day DIY Mini Fiasco Kit from the Gelato Fiasco to surprise your sweetheart with a sweet treat! Kits include two hand-packed pints of gelato (chosen from 23 flavors), two brownies, and Valentine’s Day–themed toppings and sprinkles.
When: Friday through Monday
Where: 425 Fore St., Portland
Something to Listen to:
This Saturday, catch Through the Looking Glass, Palaver Strings’ final chamber concert of the year at Mayo Street Arts in Portland! The performance will feature pieces that challenge the norms of classical music, including Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, a set of original pieces written by Palaver violist Elizabeth Moore, and Florence Price’s A Minor String Quartet. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door, and all attendees will need to provide proof of vaccination.
When: 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday
Where: 10 Mayo St., Portland
Something to Look Forward to:
If you haven’t checked out the Flavors of Freeport yet, consider this your reminder! From now until the end of February, participating businesses are offering special menu items made with local ingredients and giving out entry stickers to the Freeport Foodie Lotto. Plus, next Saturday, head downtown for the inaugural Frosty Food Truck Frolic to enjoy live music and local food and beverages from businesses including Freeport Oyster Bar and Bow Street Market.
When: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, February 19
