The Maine Weekender, January 21—23
At what point would you say that Maine is in the middle of winter? Do you measure it by how much snow has accumulated? Or perhaps it only feels like a true New England winter once your driveway has turned into a treacherous (yet exhilarating) ice rink, making any trip to or from the car an expedition? If you’re really particular, maybe you determine it based on whether or not the famed ice disc has shown up and is spinning in the Presumpscot River in Westbrook! No matter how you judge it, we think it’s safe to say that winter has settled into the Pine Tree State and is here to stay. Here’s our roundup for this weekend in Maine:
Something to Do:
Do the winter blues have you down? Instead of running from the cold, try embracing it! Maine Farmland Trust recently debuted its 2022 Winter Activities Map, which lists farms across the state hosting events throughout the colder months. Sign up for the map for free, with the option of donating up to $50, and start planning adventures to get you through until the spring thaw.
When: Through Wednesday, March 30
Somewhere to Go:
While it’s hard to argue with the convenience of virtual yoga classes, if you want to shake up your routine in an earthy way, head to Westbrook this Saturday for goat yoga at Smiling Hill Farm! Led by instructor Ashley Flowers, the class will start and end with 15-minute sessions with the goats, during which participants can pet and take pictures with their favorite barnyard friends.
When: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Saturday
Where: 781 County Rd., Westbrook
Something to Drink:
Craving something tropical? Stop by Aprés in Portland this weekend to try the Avondale, a kiwi raspberry hard seltzer that will transport you to a warmer climate. Plus, the Creative Collective, a traveling market featuring the work of Maine makers, will be there on Saturday! Some of the artists include Oterra Designs, metalsmith Sari Rae, and illustrator Tara Rook. Plus, Indian fusion and street food company Ghee will be serving food to keep you sated while you browse.
When: Noon to 5 p.m., Saturday
Where: 148 Anderson St., Portland
Something to Eat:
You might not know it yet, but the thing that’s been missing from your life this winter is a pig roast! Luckily for you, this Sunday the team at Thoroughfare in Yarmouth is hosting Pig Roast on the Patio! Cooked low and slow, the pig from farm-to-table staple Primo in Rockland will be served as barbecue pork sandwiches on potato buns, with slaw and baked beans on the side. This is a first-come, first-served event, and a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit 317 Main Community Music Center!
When: 1 p.m. to close, Sunday
Where: 367 Main St., Yarmouth
Something to Look Forward to:
Did you make a New Year’s resolution to cook more this year, but don’t know where to start? Try taking a cooking class! Next Wednesday, the Maker’s Galley in Portland is hosting a winter cooking class, featuring founder of 2Gether We Cook, chef Amy Kayne. With Amy’s guidance and support every step of the way, learn how to make avegolemono (a Greek lemon soup), a warm spinach salad with spiced pork, roasted apple, and smoked gouda, and an entree of chili spiced chicken. Expand your taste buds and your cooking repertoire in one fell swoop!
