The Maine Weekender, March 18—20
We’re knocking on wood as we write this, but it sure looks like warmer weather is on the way. With the first day of spring this Sunday—in addition to (what may be the very last) daylight saving time change this past weekend—days are getting steadily brighter, which means mud season can’t be far away! With Maine’s 202nd birthday on Tuesday and St. Patrick’s Day today, it’s been a full week, and we assume we’re not alone when we say our heads are spinning. Read on for our spring-y roundup for this weekend in Maine:
Something to Do:
Are you ready to pull your garden out of hibernation, or perhaps you’re new to gardening? Prepare for spring planting with a seed-starting class at Guini Ridge Farm in Rockport! Participants will learn about the best soils and containers to use for specific plants, the basic science of seed germination, and how heat mats and lamps can help the growing process. Tickets cost $15, and all proceeds will go to World Central Kitchen in support of the people of Ukraine.
When: 10–11:30 a.m. Saturday
Where: 310 Commercial St., Rockport
Somewhere to Go:
Nothing beats a live concert in a beautiful location! This Friday, make your way to Cliff House Maine for Concert on the Cliff, featuring the lead singer of Guster, Adam Gardner, and Chris Trapper of the Push Stars. Plus, if you’re interested in booking a stay at the resort, call 855.969.2951 for a two-night package that includes concert tickets. Be sure to purchase soon—the Saturday performance has already sold out.
When: 8:30 p.m. Friday
Where: 591 Shore Rd., York
Something to Contribute to:
We’re celebrating new beginnings this year by bringing back our popular WedMaine guide as a section of our website filled with beautiful Maine weddings to inspire you and resources to help you plan your special day. We’ll also be publishing a special WedMaine section of our favorite weddings in Maine magazine’s July issue. If you are a photographer who has shot a Maine wedding in the past two years and would like to be featured online or in the July issue, submit your photos by April 1!
Something to Eat:
Specialty market The Butchers and Bakers opened in Brunswick last week and offers a range of prepared foods, produce, coffee, wines, charcuterie, and cheeses from local farms, as well as gluten-free baked goods and fresh meat butchered daily. Located in the Tontine Mall along Maine Street, this new neighborhood staple will be the perfect lunch spot and market to stop by during excursions to the midcoast.
When: 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Thursday–Tuesday
Where: 149 Maine St., Brunswick
Something to Watch:
Are you getting tired of Netflix and find yourself craving live theater? The Belfast Maskers are putting on the second consecutive weekend performances of Dale Wasserman’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest this Friday through Sunday! Not for the faint of heart (and not recommended for children under the age of 13 due to coarse language and adult situations), this adaptation of Ken Kesey’s classic novel takes a hard look at the brutal reality of living in a mental institution in the 1960’s through a lens of dark humor and irresistible characters.
When: 7–9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2–4 p.m. Sunday
Where: 17 Court St., Belfast
Something to Put on Your Radar:
Fly fishing season is upon us! Prepare to hit the water this spring with a fly-tying clinic at Bissell Brothers’ taproom in Portland next Wednesday as a part of the brewery’s Cabin Fever Reliever winter events. Presented in partnership with L.L. Bean, instructors from the retailer’s Outdoor Discovery programs will be teaching participants how to tie a basic fly for beginners and an advanced fly for seasoned fly fishers. All materials are provided for this free event, but be sure to show up on time because space is limited!
When: 6–8 p.m. Wednesday, March 23
Where: 38 Resurgam Place, Portland
