In the pilot episode of Maine magazine’s new video series WeGo, hosts Carolyn Brady and Kat Englishman embark on a journey to Carrabassett Valley for a quintessential Maine experience: dog sledding. At the heart of the series is an enthusiasm to experience the full gambit of what Maine has to offer, whether on an outdoor adventure or in one of the Pine Tree State’s many cultural centers. In the spirit of WeGo, we’ve put together a list of Maine dog sledding companies, so that YOU can GO, too!

While we are eager to explore the state, we should all be following the social distancing guidelines that are in place. If you’re not yet able to visit these businesses in person, we hope this list will inform and inspire you as you make plans for future trips around Maine.

Dogsled Maine

Featured in the WeGo pilot episode, Dogsled Maine is a family-run business operating out of Carrabassett Valley. Owners Brian and Kate Ray adopt retired sled dogs and Arctic breed rescues to pull customers through picturesque trails near Sugarloaf Mountain. After your ride, be sure to stop by the couple’s other business venture, the Maine Beer Shed, for a refreshing beverage and local food sourced from farms in the Kingfield area.

Mahoosuc Guide Service

Going into its 30th year of business, Mahoosuc Guide Service in Newry leads a variety of dog sledding and canoeing trips throughout the year. With years of experience mushing in Alaska, the Yukon, and the Eastern Canadian Arctic, guides Kevin Slater and Polly Mahoney will make you feel right at home on a sled. Offerings range from day outings to weekend-long expeditions, with no experience necessary for most trips.

Maine Dogsledding Adventures

For the adventurous Maine traveler who wants to delve deep into the Pine Tree State, Maine Dogsledding Adventures in Millinocket is the answer to your prayers. Owners Don and Angel Hibbs are seasoned sled dog racers who wanted to pass on their love of the sport to the general public. With half-day and full-day tour options, the team at Maine Dogsledding Adventures will take you through the southern edge of Baxter State Park and make sure you get a great view of Mount Katahdin. 

Ultimate Dog Sledding Experience

Based in Oxford, Ultimate Dogsledding Experience is run by sled racing veteran Alex Therriault, who’s been a musher since age three. Theriault and his team are fans of a choose-your-own adventure format—with extra emphasis on adventure. Each dog on the team is trained for racing, and their need for speed makes them stand out from the pack. With trip offerings ranging from two hours to three days, there is a dog sledding experience for everyone. Be prepared, though; when the dogs get up to speed, they’re guaranteed to take your breath away!
